Bitaxe Gamma
The Bitaxe Gamma 601 is an open-source Bitcoin miner built around one Bitmain BM1370 chip. It hashes about 1.2 TH/s on 15 to 20 W, runs on a 5 V supply, connects over 2.4 GHz WiFi and is set up from a browser. It is the most popular way to try real ASIC mining at home.

Good and less good
Good
- Real ASIC hashrate for the price of a dinner for two.
- Fully open hardware and firmware, with a large community and many sellers.
- Sips power: about 160 kWh a year, less than a fridge.
- Browser setup with live stats, temperature and fan control in AxeOS.
Less good
- At about 1.2 TH/s, finding a block alone is very unlikely. Expect a tiny, irregular share of pool rewards instead.
- The fan is audible in a quiet bedroom, more so when overclocked.
- No case by default, and the board gets warm. Keep it away from fabric and dust.
- 2.4 GHz WiFi only, no Ethernet port.
Set it up on DirectPool
The Gamma is set up in AxeOS, a web page served by the miner itself. You open it by typing the miner's IP address, shown on its small screen, into a browser on the same network.
- Stratum Host
- stratum.directpool.io
- Stratum Port
- 3333
- Stratum User
- your_bc1_address.worker_name
- Password
- x
Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.
- 1.Power the miner on. On first boot it opens its own WiFi hotspot called Bitaxe_XXXX (the last letters vary). Join it from your phone or laptop.
- 2.A setup page should open by itself. If not, go to http://192.168.4.1 in a browser.
- 3.Enter your home WiFi name and password. It must be a 2.4 GHz network. The miner restarts and joins your WiFi, and its screen shows its new IP address.
- 4.Type that IP address into a browser on the same network to open AxeOS, then open Settings (on newer versions, the Pool tab).
- 5.Fill in the four pool fields with the values above, click Save, then Restart.
Common mistakes
- Putting stratum+tcp:// in the Stratum Host field. AxeOS wants the bare host name, with the port in its own field.
- Typing the Bitcoin address by hand. Copy and paste it from your wallet so one wrong character does not send rewards nowhere.
- Using a 5 GHz network, or a router that mixes 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name. If the miner will not connect, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name.
- Forgetting to click Restart after Save. The new pool is only used after the restart.
- Using a weak phone charger or USB-C power. The Gamma needs a 5 V supply that can deliver at least 6 A through the barrel jack.
After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Electricity cost
Running all year at about 18 W, the Bitaxe Gamma uses about 158 kWh a year.

Questions
- How much does a Bitaxe Gamma earn on DirectPool?
- Very little in regular money. At about 1.2 TH/s it holds a tiny slice of the pool, so when the pool finds a block, its payout in that block is small. People run it to support decentralised mining and for the small chance of a share in a block, not for income.
- What is the difference between the Bitaxe Gamma and the Gamma Turbo?
- The Gamma has one BM1370 chip and runs on 5 V at 15 to 20 W. The Gamma Turbo (GT 801) has two BM1370 chips, roughly double the hashrate, and needs a 12 V supply.
- Can the Bitaxe Gamma connect over Ethernet?
- No. It only has 2.4 GHz WiFi. If your router uses one name for 2.4 and 5 GHz and the miner will not connect, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name.
- Is the Bitaxe Gamma loud?
- At stock settings it makes a quiet fan hum, fine in a living room or office. Overclocking raises fan speed and noise.
- Which settings do I enter for DirectPool?
- In AxeOS Settings: Stratum Host stratum.directpool.io, Stratum Port 3333, Stratum User your bc1 address followed by a dot and a worker name, Password x. Save, then Restart.
- How much electricity does it use in a year?
- About 160 kWh at 18 W around the clock. At 0.20 per kWh that is about 32 a year in your currency.
