What do kH/s, GH/s and TH/s mean?

A hash is one guess at the answer that finds a Bitcoin block. Hashrate is how many guesses a miner makes every second. The letters are sizes: k is a thousand, M a million, G a billion, T a trillion. Each step is 1,000 times the one before.

FIG. 1The ladder: every step is 1,000 times biggerRead it top to bottom. The letter in front of H/s tells you how many zeros to add: three more zeros for every step.
  1. H/s
    hashes per second
    1 guesses every second (one)
One guess a second. Nothing mines this slowly.
  2. ×1,000
    kH/s
    kilohashes per second
1,000 guesses every second (a thousand)
    NerdMiner v2 250 kH/s
  3. ×1,000
    MH/s
    megahashes per second
1,000,000 guesses every second (a million)
No current miner sits here. A Bitaxe Gamma is about 1,200,000 MH/s, so over a million times faster.
  4. ×1,000
    GH/s
    gigahashes per second
1,000,000,000 guesses every second (a billion)
    Bitaxe Ultra 450 GH/s, Lucky Miner LV06 500 GH/s, Bitaxe Supra 600 GH/s
  5. ×1,000
    TH/s
    terahashes per second
1,000,000,000,000 guesses every second (a trillion)
    Lucky Miner LV07 1 TH/s, Bitaxe Gamma 1.2 TH/s, Bitaxe Gamma Turbo 2.15 TH/s, Lucky Miner LV08 4.5 TH/s and 10 more
  6. ×1,000
    PH/s
    petahashes per second
1,000,000,000,000,000 guesses every second (a quadrillion)
Mining pools and farms. 1 PH/s is 5 Antminer S21s running together.
  7. ×1,000
    EH/s
    exahashes per second
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 guesses every second (a quintillion)
The whole Bitcoin network: about 958 EH/s on 2026-10-05.
FIG. 21 TH/s is 1,000 GH/sEach small square is 1 GH/s, a billion guesses a second. All 1,000 squares together make 1 TH/s.

The orange part is a Bitaxe Ultra at 450 GH/s: it fills 450 of the 1,000 squares, a bit under half of 1 TH/s. A Bitaxe Gamma at 1.2 TH/s would fill the whole grid and 200 more squares.

FIG. 3Why charts of hashrate use a stretched scaleThree real miners drawn two ways. On a normal scale the small ones vanish. On a scale where every step is ×1,000, they all fit.

FIG. 5Solo mine Bitcoin in this browserThis page hashes real block headers from DirectPool's Bitcoin solo pool on your processor and, if you allow it, your graphics card. Every hash that meets the pool's target is sent as a share. If one also meets the network target, it is a real block paying your address.

Shares this browser finds will be listed here.

Off. Raise the GPU above 0% to ask the browser for an adapter. The browser picks the adapter; this page cannot list your hardware.

Percentages control hashing time, not watts or exact hardware utilization. At 100%, each selected device hashes as fast as this browser allows. More CPU threads use more of your processor.

Mining stops when you switch tabs or leave the page, and never starts on its own.

A block, at the network difficulty
132.72 T

A block needs a hash with a difficulty of 132.72 T. Shares at the pool's lower target show the work is real; they do not pay on their own.

01

What is a hash, in plain words?

Finding a block is like a lottery where you print your own tickets. Each ticket is a hash: the miner mixes the block data with a number, runs it through the SHA-256 function and looks at the result. If the result is below a target set by the network, that miner found the block. If not, it changes the number and prints the next ticket.

Nobody can predict which ticket wins, so the only way to do better is to print more tickets per second. That is all hashrate is. A NerdMiner prints a few hundred thousand a second. The whole network prints about 958 EH/s worth (checked 2026-10-05).

02

What does it mean for my miner?

Your share of the network's hashrate is your chance of finding each block. Your share of a pool's hashrate is roughly your share of what that pool earns. See your real numbers on the odds calculator.

When you compare machines, put them in the same unit first, then look at watts too: the miners page lists hashrate, power and efficiency side by side, and you can sort by any column.

Questions

What is a hash?
A hash is one guess. A miner takes the block it is working on, changes a small number in it, and runs it through the SHA-256 function. If the result is low enough, the block is found. If not, it changes the number and tries again.
What does TH/s mean?
Terahashes per second: a trillion guesses every second. A Bitaxe Gamma does about 1.2 TH/s.
How many GH/s are in 1 TH/s?
1,000. Every step up the ladder (kH, MH, GH, TH, PH, EH) is 1,000 times the step before it.
Is 500 GH/s more than 1 TH/s?
No. 500 GH/s is 0.5 TH/s, half of 1 TH/s. Always compare in the same unit.
Does more hashrate mean more bitcoin?
On average, yes, in direct proportion. Twice the hashrate means twice the chance of finding a block, and twice the share of a pool reward. It also usually means more electricity.
Why does my miner show a different number than the box?
Hashrate moves around with temperature, firmware, tuning and luck in the short term. Look at the average over an hour or a day, not the number of the moment.
