Bitaxe Gamma Turbo

by Bitaxe (open source), 2x BM1370, open source hardware

The Bitaxe Gamma Turbo, sold as the Bitaxe GT 801, is the two-chip version of the Bitaxe Gamma. Two BM1370 chips give about 2 to 2.4 TH/s for 35 to 43 W. It needs a 12 V power supply instead of 5 V, has a larger fan and heatsink, and uses the same AxeOS browser setup.

Good and less good

Good

  • About twice the hashrate of a Bitaxe Gamma in one unit, with one WiFi connection and one screen.
  • Same open hardware, firmware and AxeOS dashboard as the rest of the Bitaxe family.
  • Good efficiency for a small miner, around 18 J/TH.

Less good

  • Still a small miner: about 2 TH/s rarely finds a block alone. Rewards come as small pool shares.
  • Louder and warmer than the single-chip Gamma.
  • Needs a 12 V supply with an XT30 plug, which you may have to buy separately.
  • Static-sensitive bare board, so handle it by the edges.

Set it up on DirectPool

Like every Bitaxe, the Gamma Turbo is set up in AxeOS, the web page the miner serves at its own IP address. The address appears on the screen once it joins your WiFi.

Changing the location only changes the address shown above. Copy it into your miner settings and restart or reconnect the miner. Miners already connected stay where they are. Every server mines the same pool, with the same payouts.

This measures your browser connection, not your miner or the full relay-to-pool path.

Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.

  1. 1.Power the miner on. On first boot it opens its own WiFi hotspot called Bitaxe_XXXX. Join it from your phone or laptop.
  2. 2.A setup page should open by itself. If not, go to http://192.168.4.1 in a browser.
  3. 3.Enter your home WiFi name and password. It must be a 2.4 GHz network. The miner restarts and joins your WiFi, and its screen shows its new IP address.
  4. 4.Type that IP address into a browser on the same network to open AxeOS, then open Settings (on newer versions, the Pool tab).
  5. 5.Fill in the four pool fields with the values above, click Save, then Restart.

Common mistakes

  • Putting stratum+tcp:// in the Stratum Host field. AxeOS wants the bare host name, with the port in its own field.
  • Typing the Bitcoin address by hand. Copy and paste it from your wallet so one wrong character does not send rewards nowhere.
  • Using a 5 GHz network, or a router that mixes 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name. If the miner will not connect, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name.
  • Forgetting to click Restart after Save. The new pool is only used after the restart.
  • Trying to power it from USB-C or a 5 V Bitaxe adapter. The Gamma Turbo needs 12 V; USB-C is only for flashing.
  • Running it without both chips under the heatsink, for example after removing the cooler. Both chips overheat fast.

After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Questions

Is the Bitaxe Gamma Turbo the same as the Bitaxe GT?
Yes. GT stands for Gamma Turbo, and 801 is the current board revision. Sellers use both names.
Gamma Turbo or two Bitaxe Gammas?
Hashrate is about the same. The Gamma Turbo is one device to manage and one supply, while two Gammas cost a little more and take two WiFi slots but keep running if one fails.
What power supply does the Gamma Turbo need?
A 12 V DC supply with an XT30 connector. D-Central recommends 12 V at 10 A to leave headroom. It cannot run from USB-C.
Which settings do I enter for DirectPool?
In AxeOS Settings: Stratum Host stratum.directpool.io, Stratum Port 3333, Stratum User your bc1 address plus .worker, Password x. Save, then Restart.
How much electricity does it use?
About 330 kWh a year at 38 W. At 0.20 per kWh, about 67 a year in your currency.
