Don't trust the pool. Check it.

Everything below comes live from the pool server: the settings it runs with, the exact payout of the block it is working on right now, and the code it runs. Each part comes with a way to check it without us.

If the pool found a block right now, the block itself would pay

Check it without us

  1. Look at a found block. No block found yet. When one is, it will be linked here and in the track record above, straight to its page on mempool.space. The first transaction (the coinbase) lists every payout and carries the tag directpool.io. The fee output goes to the fee address above and is 1% of the reward.
  2. Look before a block is found. Your miner receives this same coinbase with every job (the mining.notify message). Anyone who can decode it can see their own address and amount in it, exactly as listed above.
  3. Look at the code. The pool runs open source software. The three changes it adds are linked below, small enough to read.

Source code

The pool runs p2poolv2 v0.12.0, an open source Bitcoin pool, with these changes on top. Each one passes the full test suite of the project.

  • Deferred payoutsp2poolv2-v0.12.0-deferred-payouts.patch

Miners whose share is below the minimum payout keep a balance that is paid by a later block, instead of getting a tiny output or nothing. Every block is written to a payout ledger.

  • NerdMiner difficultyp2poolv2-v0.12.0-decimal-suggest-difficulty.patch

Accepts the decimal difficulty that NerdMiners ask for (they were disconnected before) and rounds it up to the pool minimum.

  • Connected minersp2poolv2-v0.12.0-worker-connections.patch

Counts open connections, so a small miner shows as connected before its first share. Does not touch payouts.

  • Connection count fixp2poolv2-v0.12.0-worker-connections-leak.patch

A miner that dropped its connection abruptly stayed counted as connected. Every closed connection is now taken off the count. Does not touch payouts.

The honest part

  • Blocks are rare at this size. A small pool can go a long time without a block. Until one is found, nobody on the pool is paid, including the operator.
  • Recorded balances depend on the next block. A share under the minimum payout is paid by a later block found by the pool. If the pool stopped before finding another one, those balances would not be paid. The ledger is backed up off the server every hour.
  • The pool never holds bitcoin. There is no wallet to empty and nothing to withdraw: payouts only exist inside found blocks.
  • The operator mines here too. The fee address also mines on the pool with rented hashrate, and is paid by the same rules as everyone else.
