Bitaxe Ultra

by Bitaxe (open source), BM1366, open source hardware

The Bitaxe Ultra 204 is the 2023 Bitaxe built on one Bitmain BM1366 chip, the same chip as the Lucky Miner LV06. It hashes 400 to 500 GH/s on 12 to 15 W from a 5 V supply and is set up in AxeOS. Newer Bitaxes are faster, so buy an Ultra only cheap and used.

Good and less good

Good

  • Often very cheap used.
  • Fully open hardware with long community support.
  • Low power: about 115 kWh a year.

Less good

  • About a third of a Bitaxe Gamma's hashrate for similar power.
  • At under 0.5 TH/s, a solo block is extremely unlikely.
  • Mostly sold used, so condition varies.

Set it up on DirectPool

The Ultra uses AxeOS, the browser dashboard built into every Bitaxe. Open the IP address shown on its screen from a device on the same WiFi.

Changing the location only changes the address shown above. Copy it into your miner settings and restart or reconnect the miner. Miners already connected stay where they are. Every server mines the same pool, with the same payouts.
Browser ping, measured live from this page
Europe, Lithuania...
North America, Chicago...
Asia, Jakarta...
This measures your browser connection, not your miner or the full relay-to-pool path.

Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.

  1. 1.Power the miner on. On first boot it opens its own WiFi hotspot called Bitaxe_XXXX. Join it from your phone or laptop.
  2. 2.A setup page should open by itself. If not, go to http://192.168.4.1 in a browser.
  3. 3.Enter your home WiFi name and password. It must be a 2.4 GHz network. The miner restarts and joins your WiFi, and its screen shows its new IP address.
  4. 4.Type that IP address into a browser on the same network to open AxeOS, then open Settings (on newer versions, the Pool tab).
  5. 5.Fill in the four pool fields with the values above, click Save, then Restart.

Common mistakes

  • Putting stratum+tcp:// in the Stratum Host field. AxeOS wants the bare host name, with the port in its own field.
  • Typing the Bitcoin address by hand. Copy and paste it from your wallet so one wrong character does not send rewards nowhere.
  • Using a 5 GHz network, or a router that mixes 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name. If the miner will not connect, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name.
  • Forgetting to click Restart after Save. The new pool is only used after the restart.
  • Powering it from the USB-C port. On the Ultra, USB-C is for flashing and serial logs only; power goes through the barrel jack.
  • Running very old firmware from a used unit. Update AxeOS first; old versions have weaker WiFi handling.

After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Questions

Is the Bitaxe Ultra still worth it?
Only when it is much cheaper than a Gamma. It works fine, but a Gamma does about 2.5 times the hashrate for similar power.
What is the difference between the Bitaxe Ultra and the Lucky Miner LV06?
Both use one BM1366 chip and hash about the same. The Ultra is the original open-source design; the LV06 is a cheaper commercial device in a case with its own firmware fork.
Which settings do I enter for DirectPool?
In AxeOS Settings: Stratum Host stratum.directpool.io, Stratum Port 3333, Stratum User your bc1 address plus .worker, Password x. Save, then Restart.
How much does it cost to run?
About 115 kWh a year at 13 W, so roughly 23 a year at 0.20 per kWh.
Can I power it from a USB charger?
No. It needs a 5 V barrel-jack supply. The USB-C port is for flashing only.
