Avalon Nano 3S
The Avalon Nano 3S is a desktop Bitcoin miner from Canaan that doubles as a small 140 W heater. It hashes about 6 TH/s, runs at 30 to 40 dB, comes with a GaN power adapter and WiFi module, and is set up in the Avalon Family app or a browser. It accepts any pool, including DirectPool.

Good and less good
Good
- Quiet enough for a living room, and the heat is useful in winter.
- Finished product: case, adapter and WiFi module in the box.
- About as much hashrate as five Bitaxe Gammas.
- Works with any pool, not only the F2Pool card it ships with.
Less good
- About 23 J/TH: less efficient than a NerdQAxe++ or large industrial miners.
- About 1,230 kWh a year. Outside heating season, that heat is wasted.
- Closed firmware, and setup leans on Canaan's app.
- At 6 TH/s, a solo block is still very unlikely. Expect small pool payouts.
Set it up on DirectPool
Pool settings are under Pool Config, either in the Avalon Family phone app or on the web page served at the miner's IP address.
- Pool URL
- stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333
- Worker
- your_bc1_address.worker_name
- Password
- x
Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.
- 1.Plug in the WiFi module and the power adapter, then connect the miner to your network with the app (WiFi) or a network cable.
- 2.Install the Avalon Family app (iOS or Android) and add the miner, or find its IP address in the app or your router and open it in a browser.
- 3.Open Pool Config. The box ships pointed at F2Pool through the QR service card; you can ignore that card if you use DirectPool.
- 4.In Pool 1, enter the values above. Pools 2 and 3 are backups; you can leave them or put DirectPool in them too.
- 5.Save (in the app) or Submit (in the browser). The app asks for the miner password, admin by default, and restarts the miner. In the browser, go to the dashboard and click Reboot.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out stratum+tcp:// or the port. On Avalon miners the Pool URL field takes the full address, scheme and port included.
- Scanning the included F2Pool card and wondering why the miner does not show on DirectPool. The card sets up F2Pool, not your own pool.
- Typing the Bitcoin address by hand in the Worker field. Copy and paste it.
- Keeping the default admin password. Change it so others on your network cannot redirect your hashrate.
- Standing it on a soft surface or against a wall. It needs a flat, open spot so warm air can escape.
After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Electricity cost
Running all year at about 140 W, the Avalon Nano 3S uses about 1,227 kWh a year.
| Price per kWh | Per year | Per month |

Questions
- Can I use the Avalon Nano 3S with DirectPool instead of F2Pool?
- Yes. Open Pool Config in the Avalon Family app or the miner's web page and enter stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333, your bc1 address plus .worker, and x as the password.
- Avalon Nano 3S or Nano 3?
- The Nano 3S hashes about 6 TH/s against about 4 TH/s for the Nano 3, at a similar 140 W. Buy the 3S unless the Nano 3 is much cheaper.
- Is the Avalon Nano 3S loud?
- Canaan lists 30 to 40 dB, quiet enough for a living room. It is quieter than an Antminer by a long way.
- Can it really heat a room?
- It turns its 140 W into heat, like a small electric heater on its lowest setting. Enough to take the chill off a small room, not to heat a house.
- How much electricity does it use?
- About 1,230 kWh a year at 140 W, so about 245 a year at 0.20 per kWh.
- What is the default admin password?
- admin on the units we checked. Change it after setup.
