Avalon Mini 3

by Canaan

The Avalon Mini 3 is a Canaan Bitcoin miner built as an 800 W room heater. It hashes about 37.5 TH/s at 21.3 J/TH, runs at 35 to 55 dB, and plugs into a normal wall socket. It is long and slim, has WiFi and LAN, and is set up in the Avalon Family app or a browser.

Good and less good

Good

  • Heats a room while mining: the 800 W is not wasted in winter.
  • Plugs into a normal socket, no special wiring for most homes.
  • Much quieter than an industrial miner of similar hashrate.

Less good

  • About 7,000 kWh a year if run non-stop. In summer, the heat works against you.
  • Closed firmware and an app-first setup.
  • Large and heavy (8.35 kg, 76 cm long).
  • Official price is high for the hashrate compared with used industrial miners.

Set it up on DirectPool

Pool settings are under Pool Config in the Avalon Family app, or on the web page at the miner's IP address.

Changing the location only changes the address shown above. Copy it into your miner settings and restart or reconnect the miner. Miners already connected stay where they are. Every server mines the same pool, with the same payouts.

This measures your browser connection, not your miner or the full relay-to-pool path.

Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.

  1. 1.Plug it into a wall socket and connect it to your network with the WiFi module and the app, or with a network cable.
  2. 2.Install the Avalon Family app (iOS or Android) and add the miner, or find its IP address in the app or your router and open it in a browser.
  3. 3.Open Pool Config. The box ships pointed at F2Pool through the QR service card; you can ignore that card if you use DirectPool.
  4. 4.In Pool 1, enter the values above. Pools 2 and 3 are backups; you can leave them or put DirectPool in them too.
  5. 5.Save (in the app) or Submit (in the browser). The app asks for the miner password, admin by default, and restarts the miner. In the browser, go to the dashboard and click Reboot.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out stratum+tcp:// or the port. On Avalon miners the Pool URL field takes the full address, scheme and port included.
  • Scanning the included F2Pool card and wondering why the miner does not show on DirectPool. The card sets up F2Pool, not your own pool.
  • Typing the Bitcoin address by hand in the Worker field. Copy and paste it.
  • Keeping the default admin password. Change it so others on your network cannot redirect your hashrate.
  • Sharing a circuit with a kettle or another heater. 800 W around the clock is a big continuous load; check what else is on that circuit.
  • Using it in a bathroom or damp room. Canaan rates it IP22, which is not meant for wet areas.

After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Questions

Can the Avalon Mini 3 mine on DirectPool?
Yes. Ignore the F2Pool card, open Pool Config in the app or web page and enter stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333, your bc1 address plus .worker, and x as the password.
Does it actually heat a room?
Yes. Almost all 800 W ends up as heat, the same as an 800 W electric heater. It suits a room you would heat anyway.
How loud is the Avalon Mini 3?
Canaan lists 35 to 55 dB depending on the mode, from a quiet hum to a loud conversation.
How much electricity does it use?
About 7,000 kWh a year at 800 W, so about 1,400 a year at 0.20 per kWh. In heating season, part of that replaces your normal heating.
Avalon Mini 3 or Avalon Q?
The Mini 3 is a quieter 800 W heater with about 37.5 TH/s. The Avalon Q is a 1,674 W box with about 90 TH/s, better efficiency and more noise.
