Avalon Q
The Avalon Q is Canaan's home Bitcoin miner for people who want serious hashrate without a server room. It hashes about 90 TH/s on 1,674 W, about 18.6 J/TH, runs at 45 to 65 dB depending on mode, has WiFi and Ethernet, and plugs into a wall socket. It sits between home heaters and industrial ASICs.

Good and less good
Good
- About 15 times the hashrate of the Avalon Nano 3S in one box.
- Good efficiency for a home unit, about 18.6 J/TH.
- Ethernet and WiFi, plus quieter work modes for living spaces.
Less good
- About 14,700 kWh a year at full power. Electricity is the main cost.
- Up to 65 dB in the fastest mode, loud for a living room.
- Needs a circuit rated for about 1.7 kW non-stop: 20 A on 120 V, or a normal 230 V circuit in most of Europe.
- Closed firmware and an app-first setup.
Set it up on DirectPool
Set the pool under Pool Config in the Avalon Family app, or on the web page at the miner's IP address. Work modes (quieter or faster) are changed in the app.
- Pool URL
- stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333
- Worker
- your_bc1_address.worker_name
- Password
- x
Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.
- 1.Plug in a network cable (recommended) or the WiFi module, then plug the miner into a suitable socket.
- 2.Install the Avalon Family app (iOS or Android) and add the miner, or find its IP address in the app or your router and open it in a browser.
- 3.Open Pool Config. The box ships pointed at F2Pool through the QR service card; you can ignore that card if you use DirectPool.
- 4.In Pool 1, enter the values above. Pools 2 and 3 are backups; you can leave them or put DirectPool in them too.
- 5.Save (in the app) or Submit (in the browser). The app asks for the miner password, admin by default, and restarts the miner. In the browser, go to the dashboard and click Reboot.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out stratum+tcp:// or the port. On Avalon miners the Pool URL field takes the full address, scheme and port included.
- Scanning the included F2Pool card and wondering why the miner does not show on DirectPool. The card sets up F2Pool, not your own pool.
- Typing the Bitcoin address by hand in the Worker field. Copy and paste it.
- Keeping the default admin password. Change it so others on your network cannot redirect your hashrate.
- Plugging it into a standard 15 A, 120 V circuit. 1,674 W is about 14 A, above the 12 A a 15 A circuit should carry non-stop. On 120 V use a 20 A circuit, or a 230 V circuit, checked by an electrician.
- Running it at full power in a small closed room. It gives off as much heat as a large space heater.
After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Electricity cost
Running all year at about 1,674 W, the Avalon Q uses about 14,674 kWh a year.
| Price per kWh | Per year | Per month |

| 0.10 | 1,467 | 122 |
| 0.20 | 2,935 | 245 |

Questions
- Can the Avalon Q mine on DirectPool?
- Yes. In Pool Config enter stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333 as the Pool URL, your bc1 address plus .worker as the Worker, and x as the password.
- Avalon Q or a used Antminer S19?
- A used S19 costs much less and hashes about the same, but it is far louder and needs 220 V and good ventilation. The Avalon Q is built to live in a home.
- How loud is the Avalon Q?
- Canaan lists 45 to 65 dB. The quiet mode is like a busy office; the fastest mode is like a vacuum cleaner in the next room.
- How much electricity does it use?
- About 14,700 kWh a year at 1,674 W, so about 2,900 a year at 0.20 per kWh.
- Does it need special wiring?
- On 120 V it draws about 14 A non-stop, more than a standard 15 A circuit should carry continuously (12 A). Use a 20 A circuit, or 230 V, and have an electrician check it. On a typical 230 V European circuit it draws about 7 A.
