Antminer S9 (used)
The Antminer S9 is Bitmain's 2016 industrial Bitcoin miner, now sold used for very little. It hashes about 13.5 TH/s on about 1,350 W, roughly 100 J/TH, at 76 dB. It needs a separate power supply and Ethernet. It mines fine on DirectPool, but electricity costs usually exceed rewards.

Good and less good
Good
- Very cheap to buy used, sometimes almost free.
- Over ten times the hashrate of a Bitaxe Gamma, and a useful 1.3 kW heater in winter.
- Huge community knowledge, spare parts and third-party firmware.
Less good
- About 100 J/TH: roughly five times less efficient than an Antminer S21. Electricity usually costs more than it earns.
- About 11,800 kWh a year if run non-stop.
- Very loud (76 dB) and hot.
- Old hardware: hashboards, fans and PSUs fail more often. Test before buying.
Set it up on DirectPool
The S9 is configured from the web page at its IP address. It has no screen, so you find the IP in your router.
- Pool 1 URL
- stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333
- Pool 1 Worker
- your_bc1_address.worker_name
- Pool 1 Password
- x
Replace your_bc1_address with a Bitcoin address you control (bc1 or 3). The part after the dot is a name for this machine, so you can tell your miners apart. Addresses starting with 1 are not accepted.
- 1.Connect the miner to your router with a network cable. Antminers have no WiFi.
- 2.Find its IP address in your router's device list (or with Bitmain's IP Reporter tool and the IP Report button on the control board).
- 3.Open that address in a browser on the same network and log in. The default username and password are both root.
- 4.Open the pool settings page (Miner Configuration on older firmware, Settings or Pool on newer).
- 5.Enter the values above in Pool 1. Pools 2 and 3 are backups.
- 6.Click Save & Apply (or Save). The miner restarts its mining process; hashrate shows on the status page after a few minutes.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out stratum+tcp:// or :3333. The Antminer URL field takes the full address.
- Keeping the default root password. Change it, since anyone on your network could otherwise redirect your hashrate.
- Typing the Bitcoin address by hand in the Worker field. Copy and paste it.
- Plugging it into a normal household circuit without checking the load. These machines draw well over a kilowatt non-stop.
- Buying one without a power supply. The S9 runs on 12 V DC from a separate PSU and cannot plug into the wall directly.
- Running it in a living space. At 76 dB it is too loud for most homes outside a garage or basement.
After a few minutes, paste your address on the pool page to see the machine. Small miners can take a while to send their first share.

Electricity cost
Running all year at about 1,350 W, the Antminer S9 (used) uses about 11,834 kWh a year.

Questions
- Is the Antminer S9 still worth it in 2026?
- Only if your electricity is very cheap or you want the heat anyway. At 100 J/TH, most home electricity prices cost more than the S9 earns.
- Can I run an Antminer S9 at home?
- It works on household power, but it draws about 1.35 kW non-stop and is as loud as a vacuum cleaner. A garage or basement with a dedicated circuit is best.
- Which settings do I enter for DirectPool?
- In the web interface, Pool 1 URL stratum+tcp://stratum.directpool.io:3333, Worker your bc1 address plus .worker, Password x. Save & Apply.
- Does the S9 come with a power supply?
- The miner itself does not. Most used units come with an APW3++ supply, but check the listing.
- How much electricity does it use?
- About 11,800 kWh a year at 1,350 W, so about 2,370 a year at 0.20 per kWh.
- Can I make the S9 quieter or more efficient?
- Third-party firmware such as Braiins OS can underclock it to use less power and run the fans slower, at the cost of hashrate.
